THE REALITY is, The quality of OEM toner cartridges is a direct result of the unique components within them. Hewlett Packard's components, including the toner formula itself are proprietary, meaning they are used solely by HP. These components cannot be purchased by any other manufacturer.
THE IDEA is used by companies to persuade you to purchase their less expensive printing supplies, while instilling the sense of confidence that comes from purchasing OEM supplies.
Here are similar claims we've heard:
"We manufacture using the same components and toner HP uses." (Impossible)
"We actually re-manufacture for Hewlett Packard." (Ridiculous)
"We re-package HP OEM's in our own packaging." (Outrageous)
"Our failure rate is the same as, or less than Hewlett Packard's." (Cute)
THE TEST is to try them for yourselves, but demand a warranty on opened cartridges and a return policy on any unopened cartridges, without a re-stocking fee, and free delivery of exchanged product. Also verify that the seller is willing to send a certified technician at his expense to correct any problem that may have been caused by a suspect or defective toner cartridge. This will weed out about 9/10 vendors, including the large office supply stores.
THE CONCLUSION is purchasing compatible/remanufactured toner cartridges will save you money, but an honest consequence is a higher than OEM failure rate. If immediate onsite service and support is included as a condition of the purchase, the risk is minimalized if not completely eliminated. This article is an honest attempt to disclose the truth about this somewhat controversial issue.
